With the revolution of the 5G network, 100G optical modules are widely used for longer-distance transmission. Especially in WDM network, it is the most cost-effective way to use 100G module instead of adding more network devices, esp. CFP 100G LR4 SR ER products.

Introduction
What is CFP (Wiki)
CFP stands for C form-factor pluggable (CFP, 100G form-factor pluggable) and is an MSA agreement to produce a common form-factor for transmitting high-speed digital signals. C is primarily the standard for 100 in Latin latter number 100 (centum). However, with the development of optical transceiver technology, CFP2 version will support 200G and even 400G speed systems. Also, there are CFP 100G LR4 SR ER for different transmission ranges.
The CFP transceiver is designed after the SFP (Small form-factor pluggable, Wiki) transceivers. It is significantly larger to support 100Gbit/s or even higher speed. SFP (SFP+) can only support a maximum of 10Gbit/s.
Different Versions of CFP 100G LR4 SR ER
There are 4 popular types of CFP interface optical transceivers (mostly used for the current network):
Difference of CFP 100G LR4 SR ER: CFP
Dimension: 82 mm × 13.6 mm × 144.8 mm (width×height×depth)
Rate: 10x10G, 4×25G lanes.
CFP2
Dimension: 41.5 mm × 12.4 mm × 107.5 mm (width×height×depth) – Half size of CFP transceiver
Rate: 10×10G, 4×25G, 8×25G, or 8×50G lanes
Support Coherent Optics which makes the rate up to 400Gbit/s
CFP4
Dimension: 21.5 mm × 9.5 mm × 92 mm (width×height×depth) – 1/4 size of CFP transceiver, and half size of CFP2
Rate: 4×10G or 4×25G lanes
CFP8
Dimension: 40 mm × 9.5 mm × 102 mm (width×height×depth)
Rate: 16×25G lanes (25.78125 or 26.5625 GBd) or 8×50G lanes (Not as popular as the other three types)
Compare to the other three types, CFP4 is the smallest in size, also its power requirement is the lowest, we can check the specification matrix of our CFP products as follows,
100G SR vs LR vs ER
Since all CFP modules are 100G in rate, they will support a 100GBase network. Also, we use SR (Short Range), LR (Long Range), and ER (Extended Range) to specify the distance they transmit. As we mentioned above the most popular rate for CFP modules will support 4 channel 25GB rate, so the SR/LR/ER will come with the channel numbers to define the model number of the module. Below is the spreadsheet for our CFP module ranges:
Transmit Range | Fiber Type | Rate | Transmit Distance |
SR10 (Short Range) | Multi-mode Fiber | 10x10Gbit/s | 150M |
LR4 (Long Range) | Single-mode Fiber | 4x25Gbit/s | 10KM |
ER4 (Extended Range) | Singel-mode Fiber | 4x25Gbit/s | 40KM |
